I wonder if there are any statues, carvings or paintings of native americans. Maybe totem poles? But this article does seem to raise a good point. It would be an interesting study to find out what cultures have found it necessary or important to idolize heroes, kings, etc. through basic destruction/modification of the environment.

While Egypts pyrimids would qualify, that was adding something to a basically empty desert, not defacing a natural structure for someone's glorification. Could this be predominantly a "western" concept, as progressives are wont to claim?
